The Influence of The Peroneals on Ankle Inversion and Eversion
Ankle eversion and inversion are important movements that contribute to balance, stability, and mobility during walking, running, and athletic activity. Inversion occurs when the sole of the foot turns inward toward the midline of the body, while eversion occurs when the sole turns outward away from the midline. These movements primarily take place at the subtalar joint and are controlled by several muscles surrounding the ankle.
The peroneal muscles, also known as the fibularis muscles, play a major role in ankle eversion and lateral ankle stability. The two primary peroneal muscles are the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis, located along the outer side of the lower leg. When these muscles contract, they pull the foot outward, producing eversion. In addition to creating movement, the peroneals help stabilize the ankle during weight-bearing activities and prevent excessive
inversion.
The influence of the peroneals is especially important in reducing the risk of lateral ankle sprains, which commonly occur when the foot forcefully inverts. Strong and responsive peroneal muscles act as dynamic stabilizers by quickly counteracting sudden inversion forces. Weakness or delayed activation of these muscles can increase ankle instability and injury risk.
During activities such as running, jumping, and cutting movements in sports, the peroneals help maintain proper foot alignment and balance. Rehabilitation programs for ankle injuries often include strengthening and balance exercises targeting the peroneals to improve joint stability, coordination, and overall ankle function.
